What is a Stable URL?

In Internet jargon, URL is the abbreviation for "Uniform Resource Locator." the technical term for the Internet or Web address where a web site is located. URLs are also referred to as "web links. " Because web sites are subject to frequent change, URLs often go out-of-date or "break." This means that the user may not be able to connect to the site using the URL as provided.

The time and effort spent finding, annotating and capturing links to share with students is wasted if a web site changes or moves, and the internet link is "broken." The Center for Learning and Technology has developed a way to create URLs that are periodically tested and kept up-to-date. Unlike the URLs provided in your browser address bar or taken from directly from a web site, ESCORT"s computed URLs are more reliable.
