Subject: Evaluations Terminology

Here are some of the terms you may encounter when working with evaluations in your online course:

Attachment: files that students (or you as the professor) create in a software application outside of the course. For example, students can create a document in a word processor and attach that file to an assignment for submission. The attached file appears as an attachment icon at the bottom of the assignment document when the student submits his/her work. You have several options for creating evaluations from attachments.

Pending Evaluation: status of any evaluation that has been privately saved for later release. Go to the Actions - Pending Evaluations option in the Professor Navigator to view and release any or all of them to the students they were created for.

Private Save: Once a document has been submitted with this option selected, the document can only be accessed by the student (or you the professor if you created the document, such as an evaluation) that created it and that person can edit the document indefinitely until submitted.

Response Feedback/Rating: an option available to the professor only allowing for the rating of discussion responses. Rating options are numerical from 0 - 10 and you also have the option of whether to display the rating to the student or not.

Return to Editable by Student: an option that allows you to return an assignment or discussion response back to the student (in private save mode) so that the student can then edit that document and then resubmit it. Note: once you complete this option, the document will no longer be viewable by you (as it will then be returned to "private save" mode and only the student has access to it until it is resubmitted).

Save for Student: an option for evaluations that immediately releases it for access by the student.

Show grade information?: an option on all evaluation forms giving you the ability to determine if you are going to use the grading fields available to display a grade to the student.

Stand-Alone Evaluation: an evaluation form not tied to any specific type of assignment. The purpose of this form is to give you the ability to give students feedback and evaluation on activities in your course for which there were no assignment documents created or submitted. For example you would use the Stand-Alone form to evaluate student discussion, to produce mid-term evaluations, Final grades, etc.

Users who can read this document: refers to those users in the course who can read the document in question. Usually refers to privately saved or submitted assignment documents. For private saves, only the creator of the document can read it, and for submitted assignments and evaluations, usually only the professor and the individual student can read it.
