RE: discussions from the student perspective
Asynchronous means "not at the same time" - in other words, students do not all have to be online at the same time to take part in the course discussion activity. Usually, discussions are designed to last about 2 weeks, so that students can post responses to the initial discussion starter question, but also then read and respond to their fellow classmates responses, thus generating an interactive, in-depth discussion of the issue or topic.
As far as expectations, students, when they first start taking online courses, are strongly encouraged to go through the SLN Student Orientation tutorial, which lays out for them what an online discussion consists of and how to take part in it. In addition, the instructions supplied to the students for each discussion will go a long way in setting the student's expectations as far as what and when they should contribute.
