Subject: How Students Participate in a Discussion: First Response

Below are the steps a student goes through to participate in a discussion.

1. The student finds the module's Discussion Starter document marked by the blue and purple discussion icon to its left.

2. The student opens the discussion starter document to see the discussion question and a Respond link.

3. When the student clicks the Respond link, a yellow response form comes up. The "In Response To:" box shows the content of the original posting. The student must complete the Subject and Comments fields in the form. Students can add URL links and attachments to their Responses if appropriate. Details about how to complete the Response form are given in the next document.

4. Click on the Submit Your Response button to send the response to the server so the rest of the class can see and respond to it: Submit Your Response button.

5. When the response is submitted, the following confirmation screen appears. You can return to the Module Menu (generally recommended) or the course map. By returning to the module menu you were working in, you can verify that your submission was posted. NOTE: if you use your browser's Back button to return to the module menu, you must Refresh your view to see your posting. You should generally use the links provided rather than the Back button to navigate the course.
