Subject: My concerns regarding language teaching online
A few years back, I said I would NEVER teach language at a distance because I believed it just could not compare with a "live" classroom. Yet here I am, teaching language at a distance for 2 colleges! I still have some of the same concerns, though. I find it very challenging to assess students' listening and speaking skills. I feel as though these students are not getting the same experience as students in a traditional setting. At the local community college (where I teach Spanish 1 and 2 at a distance), I struggle with trying to maintain the "integrity" of the courses I teach - I think my problem is that I'm comparing the distance experience to the live class. I need to rethink this!

I think teaching at ESC will be a bit different since the course I'll be teaching is not Spanish per se, but rather an intro to Spanish-speaking cultures (in English) and the language. This approach makes much more sense to me.

At this point, I have no trepidation regarding the technology. I feel as though I'm being trained very well!
