Course Goals and Objectives
The objectives of the course are inseparable from your personal learning goals. To assist you in evaluating your achievements, I will translate my expectations for the course into goals and objectives compatible with your own.
Goals
To help students develop the ability to think critically about the processes of social change, and the place of individuals in their communities.
To enable students to understand not only the material in the books and other learning resources, but also to sharpen their critical thinking skills, so that they can apply their learning to questions/problems/situations that have arisen and will continue to arise in their own lives.
Objectives
To gain an understanding of some of the principal variables affecting social change;
To learn about the effects of social change on some major social institutions in American society;
To explore some of the ways in which institutional and cultural change affects individuals and communities;
To explore the implications of a rapidly shrinking world, in which social change is one place that has reverberations everywhere.
