Subject: Written Assignment #1 - Due: October 5, 2003

Written Assignment #1 (Essay)
During the discussions of The Lost City, we raised the question of whether there might actually be more freedom when the choices were more limited, in that one (e.g., the adolescent) was not overwhelmed with oppportunities to do things that he or she might later regret. In the 1950's, the temptations of drugs, premarital sex, pornography, the vicarious thrills of MTV and the internet--all were much more limited. There were fewer options. This, coupled with a shared sense of guilt and propriety, made it easier to stay within the boundaries. But, some would counter, those boundaries made up a box, greatly limiting opportunities for exploration and self-discovery.

What do you think? You are invited to write an essay of 2000-2500 words (8-10 double-spaced pages) addressing this question, drawing from readings, other sources your have pursued, and the discussions.

If you have questions about this assignment, do not hesitate to contact the instructor/coordinator.
