Subject: Why I'm interested in Social Change
Like many of you, I was the first in my family to attend college. During the last third of the 20th Century, I became the father of six children, who presently range in age from her thirties to her teens (with four boys in between). I have long been intrigued by the differences in beliefs and behavior, and the assumptions in which these are grounded, not only between my parents and my adult self, and myself and my children, but between myself in my twenties and today.
Some of these are due to changes in myself, some to changes in the socio-historical context (if these can even be separated, except notionally). I'd like to examine some of the reasons for the broader social and cultural changes in this course. As for the other changes in myself, I'll explore those elsewhere.
I am also very interested in why, despite all the advances in "civilization" that have been made just in my own lifetime, we continue to see ongoing fears and hatreds that seem impervious to change. Maybe we can throw some light on why, in this course.
