IV. GATEWAY SITES

These sites contain many links to other sites. Along with the book The History Highway 2000 by Dennis Trinkle and Scott Merriman, they are a good way to locate a far greater range of sites than I have described above, some of which will have scholarly value, while others will not. Many gateway sites are simply lists of site names and addresses, so it is up to the user to assess the merit of the sites.

This site features an online history journal that, in its Research Index section, has a good list of links to online history sites.


AcademicInfo: United States History

A pretty good list of sites divided by periods and some topical areas with brief descriptions of contents.


WWW-VL: History of the United States

An immense list of links to sites that are categorized by chronological periods, historical topics, and as reference sources (including electronic texts). The quality of the sites varies tremendously.

Sponsored by the American Studies Association, this site contains brief descriptions and links for a great range of sites pertaining to many areas of American culture and society, as
well as American history.


National Women's History Project

This site has a very extensive set of links to sites concerning many categories of U. S. women's history.


American Women's History: A Research Guide

The United States Civil War Center

This center at Louisiana State University seeks "to promote study of the Civil War from the perspectives of all professions, occupations, and academic disciplines" and "to locate, index, and make available all private and public data on the Internet regarding the Civil War." This site contains links to over 5000 web sites related to the Civil War, which have been indexed under many general headings, such as "Abolition and Slavery." The database can also be searched for narrower categories or specific items. Many of the linked sites provide primary source documents of various types
