Description: | This is an interdisciplinary survey study designed to introduce some of the key concepts and thinking associated with environmental sustainability. Students will start with an introduction to systems thinking, which will provide students with the skills needed to analyze the complex interactions between human population, consumption, and the environment. Students will then learn how the biophysical world works, covering topics such as: natural laws; ecosystem organization and functions; material cycles; diversity and complexity; flexibility and adaptation; and short and long time scales. Students will then consider the effects on humans, and the biosphere, of human population dynamics, and human activities such as agriculture, fishing, extraction, manufacturing, transportation, building, and recreation. The study learning activities emphasize case studies, real-world problem-solving, and critical thinking activities. |
