Describe how will you interact with students at a distance:
Description:
Explore, create, and perform work inspired by the natural and built world. What is the ecology of your community? How do artists interpret and respond to nature, urban environments, and environmental concerns? Works by diverse artists will be analyzed. We will investigate eco-theater, dance, performance art, film, sound art and music that draw attention to issues such as climate change, alternative energy, sustainable environments, and urbanization.

Participants will collaborate in the creative process as well as develop individual critical thinking and writing skills through activities such as readings, viewings, and journaling. A walking tour of the lower Manhattan shoreline will allow us to record the sounds and sights we encounter along the way. Students will also collect objects, sounds, and images from their local communities. Poetic writing, improvisation, and performance making techniques will be used. The study will culminate in a multi-disciplinary collaborative presentation by the participants. Students may alternatively engage in an independent creative or research project.

Students interested in the arts and the environment are encouraged to enroll. No previous arts practice experience is required. Students may take this study for advanced level credit based on a discussion with the mentor.

This study fulfills the general education requirement for the Arts or Humanities not both.
