Course Concept / Description: - Top |
Course Concept / General Description: | This course develops the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing, within a cultural context and while focusing on the business environment. Unlike typical beginning Spanish courses which are organized around grammatical topics, this course teaches need-to-know Spanish for the adult student through the business and marketing lens, and uses structured dialogues and scenarios to help the learner assimilate the language. It introduces basic grammar through the vocabulary-based themes, offers an overview of Hispanic culture, both in the United States and abroad, and covers specific cultural concepts and values when conducting business in the Hispanic world. This course is a 4 credits lower division course that will completely satisfy General Education Requirements in Foreign Language. |
Catalog Description: | This course is designed for students who are interested in international business as well as for those interested in enhancing communication with Hispanic clients and consumers in the U.S. Business Spanish presents a pragmatic, “real world” introduction to the Spanish language through the lens of the Hispanic business environment Through intensive practice, beginning students will become comfortable with ‘need-to-know’ language and be able to apply it in a professional context. Language learning in this course will focus on elementary communication skills, basic vocabulary and grammatical structures. All language skills will be practiced: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students will be required to practice weekly speaking and listening skills in real time over the Internet with the instructor and the teaching assistant. Students should be available for 40 minutes for oral practices scheduled between 7:00-9:00 PM EST at least twice a week. Special accommodations will be made for army students. |

Needs Assessment/Rationale: - Top |
- Why should this course be developed (e.g., requirements of field, competitive demand, new student populations, estimated enrollment, CDL curricular directions and priorities, etc.)?
- Curricular fit with CDL courses or within AOS guidelines.
- Organization context.
This course should be developed in the attempt to respond to students' requests to learn Spanish for the business environment that they can put to work in everyday, practical applications. Unlike other Spanish courses which focus on teaching Spanish through grammar and readings on culture and geography, this course focuses on elementary Spanish in a business and work context. Instead of studying Spanish culture through festivals, food, historical events and popular tourist sites, it looks at important values to consider when dealing with the Hispanic market (both in the U.S. and beyond our borders), and cultural morés that one should be aware of in order to successfully work with Latino and Hispanic populations. Overlap with current CDL offerings in Spanish is limited to basic language structures that are necessary to comprehend in order to use the language (e.g. how verbs work and gendered nouns and adjectives).
