Description: | The Harry Van Arsdale Center for Labor Studies seeks a faculty member for a tenure-track position. The successful candidate will have a doctoral degree in sociology, anthropology or a related social science, and a demonstrated interest in working collaboratively in an interdisciplinary setting that emphasizes the study of labor and the working-class presence both in the US and globally. In addition to teaching and advising adult students, the successful candidate will participate in the coordination and development of undergraduate liberal arts curricula and programs of study for adult wage earners and union members in a variety of occupations. The successful candidate will have experience and/or interest in non-traditional and adult education.
The Harry Van Arsdale Jr. Center for Labor Studies serves approximately 1,500 students annually through partnerships with trade unions and other labor organizations. Its mission is to provide wage-earning adults with an opportunity to earn a college degree in a learning environment that celebrates their achievements and recognizes their distinctive needs.
Empire State College was founded in 1971 as a comprehensive, public college within the State University of New York. A recognized leader in offering innovative degree programs for motivated adults, the college enrolls over 18,000 students annually in associate, bachelor’s and master’s programs at 35 locations across New York State and online. Faculty work with students in one-on-one, seminar, residency-based and on-line learning modes at the graduate and undergraduate levels; the mix varies by setting. Minimum Qualifications: | Doctoral degree in sociology, anthropology, community or social relations, or an equivalent field; and a demonstrated commitment to labor, worker or adult education. The successful candidate will be computer literate, have experience with online communication and have strong organizational skills. |
Preferred Qualifications: | Strong preference will be accorded to candidates who have demonstrated experience advocating for worker’s rights and the ability to work in a wide range of subjects within the discipline. |

Rank/Salary: | Tenure-Track; Assistant Professor; 12-month appointment; salary range in low $60,000 range. |
