Description: | The Long Island Center of Empire State College seeks applications for a full-time tenure-track position in American history. We seek someone who will welcome the chance to communicate effectively with adult learners over the course of their academic career at the college, using diverse modalities. Faculty mentors work closely with students in both individual and group learning settings, regularly review work with students, and provide narrative evaluations of students’ work. The position also entails collaborative work with colleagues at the center level and college-wide, and offers some opportunity for on-line teaching through the Center for Distance Learning. The primary location for this position will be in our Hauppauge Unit in Suffolk County, though some teaching may occur at our Riverhead unit.
The Long Island Center with offices in Hauppauge, Old Westbury, and Riverhead, serves approximately 1,200 students annually. Working closely with faculty and staff in Syracuse and other units across the center, the role of the faculty member is to provide high-quality educational services to students and to enhance the college’s reputation within the community. Involvement in college governance is also expected. Increasingly, faculty are expected to work with graduate students.
Empire State College was founded in 1971 as a comprehensive, public college within the State University of New York. A recognized leader in offering innovative degree programs for motivated adults, the college enrolls over 18,000 students annually in associate, bachelor’s and master’s programs at 35 locations across New York State and online. The college is committed to building a culturally diverse faculty and multicultural learning environments. Faculty work with students in one-on-one, seminar, residency-based and on-line learning modes at the graduate and undergraduate levels; the mix varies by setting. Central to the faculty role is helping adults from diverse cultural backgrounds design and complete individually designed degrees. The college is a pioneer in mentoring adult learners, prior learning assessment and online learning. Minimum Qualifications: | Required qualifications include a doctoral degree from a regionally accredited institution in an area of American history, teaching experience at the college level, and excellent communication skills. The successful candidate must be comfortable with educational technology. |
Preferred Qualifications: | Strong preference will be accorded candidates who demonstrate knowledge of adult learning, individualized and interdisciplinary programs, prior learning assessment, learning technologies, and innovative program delivery (in particular blended learning environments), as well as demonstrated commitment to diversity issues in higher education. Experience working with education paraprofessionals is a plus. |
Special Information (e.g., travel required, evening hours, etc.): | Occasional travel within the Long Island Center, as well as around the college will be expected. Also, faculty are expected to be available to students some early evenings each week. |
Rank/Salary: | Tenure-Track; Assistant Professor; 12-month appointment; salary range in low $60,000 range. |
