Description: | At Empire State College the associate deans provide academic leadership and broad administrative support to each of our academic centers across New York State. The associate dean of each Center reports to the dean and serves as acting dean in the absence of the dean. The associate dean participates in college-wide initiatives through the associate dean group led by the associate provost, and through service on committees and task forces.
The position of associate dean centers on academic leadership, oversight of academic and student services, and professional development of academic personnel. The associate dean collaborates closely with the dean, faculty chair, center faculty and academic staff, as well as with staff in other college offices. In collaboration with the Dean the associate dean has responsibilities within the following areas: academic quality and mentoring; personnel; academic and student services; center budget, planning and management; enrollment management and student/alumni relations; outreach and community relations and Center governance and integration.
The Metropolitan Center, with units in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Staten Island, serves 1,900 students annually. The Center provides innovative approaches to learning, supports student success, and maintains links to the diverse urban environment of which it is a part. Sixty-eight full- and part-time faculty, professional employees and support staff work with a diverse student body. Students complete individually designed degrees in liberal arts and professional fields. Empire State College faculty members play a unique role as mentors, advising students in degree design from first enrollment through graduation. Professional employee roles include supporting individualized degree planning through academic review, student services, academic support services, recruitment and outreach, and administrative support.
Empire State College was founded in 1971 as a comprehensive, public college within the State University of New York. A recognized leader in offering innovative degree programs for motivated adults, the college enrolls 18,000 students annually in associate, bachelor’s and master’s programs at 35 locations across New York State and online. The college is committed to building a culturally diverse faculty and multicultural learning environments. Faculty members work with students in one-on-one, seminar, residency-based, blended and online learning modes at the graduate and undergraduate levels; the mix varies by setting. Central to the faculty role is helping adults from diverse cultural backgrounds design and carry out individually designed degrees. The college is a pioneer in mentoring adult learners, prior learning assessment and online learning. Minimum Qualifications: | An earned doctorate; faculty experience; demonstrated capacity for leadership on teaching, academic quality, curricular diversity and cultural sensitivity; demonstrated capacity to supervise high-level professional staff and personnel, academic and student service functions; and excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated capacity to lead learning design and faculty development in online, blended or hybrid learning. |
Preferred Qualifications: | Preference will be given to candidates who have academic administrative experience and an interest in a career in academic administration. Experience with adult learners, multiple pedagogies, and prior learning assessment preferred. Experience leading innovative teaching and learning initiatives is preferred. |
Special Information (e.g., travel required, evening hours, etc.): | This is a management/confidential position in which employees serve at the pleasure of the president. Occasional intrastate travel to the College’s coordinating center in Saratoga Springs, NY, and other College locations. Occasional evening and weekend obligations. |
Rank/Salary: | Mid-high $80,000 |
